Today, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) addressed the Senate floor regarding the catastrophic floods in Central Texas, which have resulted in over 100 deaths. He emphasized the heroic rescue and recovery efforts witnessed during his visit to Kerrville. Together with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), he held a moment of silence to honor those affected.
Senator Cornyn described the severity of the flood, stating, “As most Texans were sleeping on the morning of July the 4th, a 100-year flood event caused the waters of the Guadalupe River to rise an astonishing 26 feet in 45 minutes, and the loss of life was horrific.” The senator highlighted that more than 100 people died due to this flooding, including young campers and counselors at Camp Mystic.
Cornyn acknowledged efforts by officials like Governor Abbott and President Trump for their prompt response: “I’m beyond grateful to the efforts of Governor Abbott, President Trump, and Secretary Noem for their quick response… approving a Federal Disaster Declaration.”
The senator expressed personal grief as a father: “As a father of two daughters myself, my heart breaks. My heart breaks for all those who are grieving.” He also praised individuals like Dick Eastland and Scott Ruskan for their bravery during rescue operations.
Cornyn concluded by inviting his colleagues to join him in a moment of silence for victims and families affected by this disaster.
