Rice women’s tennis team defeats UAB to close regular season

The Rice women’s tennis team won 4-0 against the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) on Apr. 13, closing out their regular season.

This victory brings the No. 54 ranked Rice Owls to a final regular season record of 14 wins and 6 losses overall, with a conference record of 7-2.

In doubles play, Francesca Maguina and Ema Mravcova secured a win over Nera Tesankic and Gresi Bajri with a score of 6-1. Divna Ratkovic and Daniela Chica clinched the doubles point for Rice by defeating Julia Caffarena and Antonia Ende, 6-3. Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez were leading their match when play was stopped.

During singles matches, Schwartzman earned a quick victory over Kristyna Damaskova, winning in straight sets. Mravcova followed with another win on Court 5, while Chica sealed the overall match for Rice by defeating Tesankic in two sets.

Looking ahead, the Owls will compete next in the American Conference tournament at George R. Brown Tennis Center on Friday, April 17 at 2 p.m., facing either North Texas or Memphis depending on results from earlier rounds.
