The Rice women’s tennis team defeated Sam Houston 6-1 on Saturday at the Chuck & Wanda Beckner Tennis Center in Huntsville. With this win, Rice improved its season record to 7-3 and secured its sixth doubles point of the year.
In doubles play, Ema Mravcova and Divna Ratkovic earned a 6-1 victory over Ana Kurtsikashvili and Sara Sadainovic on Court 2. Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez clinched the doubles point for Rice with a 6-3 win against Christine Jevicky and Nayuma Subba on Court 1. The match on Court 3 was stopped with Nithesa Selvaraj and Daniela Chica leading 5-4.
Ratkovic claimed the first singles point for Rice, defeating Kurtsikashvili 6-1, 6-2. Martinez followed with a straight-set win over Ella Fitcher, finishing 6-3, 6-2. Mravcova secured her first match-clinching point of the season by beating I. Garza 6-3, 6-2.
Play continued after Rice clinched the overall match. Selvaraj won against Sadainovic in two sets, while Schwartzman lost to Subba on Court 1. Francesca Maguina closed out the day for Rice with a win over Jevicky, taking the match 7-6, 6-1.
Rice will return home to host Louisiana on Saturday, March 7, followed by Wichita State on Sunday, March 8.
