Representative Sylvia Garcia, who serves Texas’ 29th district in the U.S. Congress, shared her thoughts on recent events through a series of tweets. Her comments reflect on significant developments within the Catholic Church, domestic policy decisions, and the legacy of a former Supreme Court Justice.
On May 8, 2025, Garcia expressed her enthusiasm regarding a historic development within the Catholic Church: “Absolutely elated! – Big moment in history: Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected the first American pope, taking the name Leo XIV.” She highlighted Cardinal Prevost’s journey from serving in Peru to leading the global Church as one characterized by faith, service, and humility.
Later that day, Garcia criticized House Republicans for their legislative priorities amidst economic challenges faced by Americans. In a tweet posted on May 8, 2025, she remarked: “Americans are struggling with soaring costs. Instead of working on policies that will help working families, today House Republicans voted to rename the Gulf of Mexico.” She described these actions as “misplaced priorities.”
On May 9, 2025, Garcia paid tribute to former Supreme Court Justice David Souter. Reflecting on his legacy and impact on landmark rulings such as Planned Parenthood v. Casey, she tweeted: “Justice Souter was a humble man who held a deep reverence for the Constitution.” She emphasized his belief in upholding constitutional principles above partisan lines.
Garcia has represented Texas’s 29th District since replacing Gene Green in 2019. Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and currently residing in Houston at age 72, she is an alumna of Texas Woman’s University and Texas Southern University.
