Rep. Sylvia Garcia, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 29th district, has recently shared her perspectives on various issues through a series of tweets. The posts reflect her commitment to protecting immigrant families and critique policies related to Medicaid and maternal care.
On May 7, 2025, Rep. Garcia expressed her support for immigrant families by meeting with the ACLU of Texas. She stated: “Great to meet with @ACLUTx to discuss our shared commitment to protecting immigrant families and defending the vital programs that provide support and resources to children and their communities. Together, we’re standing up for the most vulnerable in our community.”
Later that day, she addressed concerns about potential cuts to Medicaid, criticizing former President Trump and Republicans: “We knew Trump & republicans were lying when they said they wouldn’t cut Medicaid.”
On May 8, 2025, Rep. Garcia commented on Trump’s approach towards supporting mothers, juxtaposing his proposal of a $5,000 check against his actions affecting Medicaid and maternal care: “Trump’s idea of helping moms? A $5,000 check—while he cuts Medicaid, trashes maternal care, and ignores child care costs. Moms deserve respect, resources, and a government that shows up for them.”
Sylvia Garcia has been a member of Congress since 2019 after succeeding Gene Green. Prior to this role, she served in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018. Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and now residing in Houston at age 72, Garcia holds degrees from Texas Woman’s University and Texas Southern University.
