Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Texas’ 29th district since 2019, recently used her social media platform to address several legislative and policy developments.
On July 17, 2025, Garcia criticized former President Donald Trump’s decision regarding mental health resources for LGBTQI+ individuals. She wrote, “Trump just ended the 988 crisis line for LGBTQI+ people, ripping away life-saving support from a community already under attack. This isn’t about saving money, it’s about cruelty. In the face of stigma, isolation, and rising hate, these communities need our support. We’ll fight” (posted July 17).
Later that day, Garcia addressed her stance on recent cryptocurrency legislation in Congress by posting: “Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Statement on Voting No on Cryptocurrency Bills: CLARITY and GENIUS Acts” (posted July 17).
In another post dated July 18, Garcia commented on actions taken by House Republicans concerning public broadcasting and international food assistance programs: “While kids were asleep, House Republicans gutted PBS and global food aid for the first time in decades—just to please the Felon in the White House. I stand with the children, not Trump. I voted NO.”
Garcia has served as a member of Congress since succeeding Gene Green in 2019 and previously represented her constituents in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018. Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and currently residing in Houston at age 72, she holds degrees from Texas Woman’s University (BA) and Texas Southern University (JD). Her career has included advocacy on issues affecting children’s welfare and marginalized communities.
