Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, who has represented Texas’s 29th district in the U.S. Congress since 2019, recently addressed key political and economic issues on social media. Garcia, a Houston resident with a background in law and public service, used her platform to comment on state legislative actions and federal trade policy.
On July 10, 2025, Garcia issued a statement regarding Governor Abbott’s decision to call a special session on redistricting. She posted: “Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Statement on Governor Abbott’s Decision to Call a Special Session on Redistricting https://t.co/cqirR0vusk”.
The following day, July 11, 2025, Garcia commented on proposed changes to the Tomato Suspension Agreement (TSA). She wrote: ” Trump’s push to end the Tomato Suspension Agreement (TSA) by July 14 would trigger a 17% tariff on tomatoes imported from Mexico. Salsa will be pricier, shelves emptier, and groceries more expensive. Tens of thousands of jobs, including 30,000 Texans, will be at risk. That is”.
Later that same day, Garcia referenced several congressional caucuses in another post: “@HouseDemocrats @HouseDPCC @HouseAgDems”.
Garcia was born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and has lived in Houston for many years. She earned her BA from Texas Woman’s University in 1972 and later received her JD from Texas Southern University. Before joining Congress in 2019—succeeding Gene Green—she served in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018.
