Rep. Sylvia Garcia, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 29th district, has made her stance clear on several pressing issues through a series of tweets. Garcia, who replaced Gene Green in 2019 and previously served in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018, shared her actions and opinions on matters ranging from budget cuts to equality rights.
On May 6, 2025, Rep. Sylvia Garcia announced that she had signed a discharge petition aimed at compelling an up-or-down vote in the House to safeguard Medicaid and food assistance from proposed Republican budget cuts. She emphasized the importance of these programs by stating: “Today I signed a discharge petition to force an up-or-down vote in the House to protect Medicaid and food assistance from Republican budget cuts. We must protect these critical lifelines.”
Later that day, Garcia expressed her disapproval of a Supreme Court decision regarding a transphobic ban. She described the ruling as disrespectful towards those serving in uniform and reiterated her commitment to fighting for equality: “The Supreme Court’s decision to allow this transphobic ban to remain in place is a slap in the face to the brave individuals who choose to risk their lives and serve our country in uniform. It’s shameful and disrespectful.”
In another tweet posted shortly after, Garcia shared her encounter with fellow Texans Julian Castro and Joaquin Castro, referring to them as “living Texas legends.” Her message highlighted camaraderie among political figures: “Is this double vision or what? Good to see @JulianCastro & @JoaquinCastrotx today. Living Texas legends.”
Sylvia Garcia was born in San Diego, Texas, in 1950 and resides in Houston. She graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a BA and earned a JD from Texas Southern University.
