Rep. Sylvia Garcia, who represents Texas’ 29th district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of statements on her official Twitter account addressing issues ranging from community leadership to legislative advocacy and immigrant rights.
On July 23, 2025, Garcia honored Arturo Vargas for his three decades of work at NALEO, stating: “Team Garcia is proud to honor Arturo Vargas for 30 years of service and leadership at @NALEO. He’s strengthened our democracy, empowered Latino communities, and inspired generations of public servants. ¡Gracias, Arturo!”
Later that day, she commented on proposed legislation regarding the penny: “Getting rid of the penny is like piercing the heart of the Statue of Liberty. I’m going to keep advocating for working families — because every penny counts, and we need clarity on how the Common Cents Act will impact them. Right now, it just makes no cents.” The tweet was directed at the U.S. House Financial Services Committee.
In another post dated July 23, 2025, Garcia addressed detention practices affecting women in ICE custody: “No woman should ever give birth in chains. It’s shocking we even have to say that.
That’s why today I reintroduced the bicameral Stop Shackling and Detaining Pregnant Women Act with 40 of my colleagues in the House—to make sure pregnant, postpartum, and lactating women in ICE”
Garcia has represented Texas’s 29th District since 2019 after succeeding Gene Green. She previously served as a Texas state senator from 2013 to 2018 and holds degrees from Texas Woman’s University (BA) and Texas Southern University (JD). Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950, Garcia currently resides in Houston.
