Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth largest in the United States. As of the 2010 Census, the city had a population of 2.1 million people and a total area of 656.3 square miles. Houston is the seat of Harris County. The city was founded in 1836 and was incorporated as a city on June 5, 1837. Houston was named after the former president of the Republic of Texas, Gen. Sam Houston.
