Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a U.S. Congress member representing Texas’ 29th district since 2019, recently addressed concerns over former President Donald Trump’s budget plan through a series of tweets on May 14, 2025. Her comments focused on the potential impact of the proposed Medicaid cuts.

In her first tweet, Garcia highlighted the magnitude of the proposed changes by stating that “Trump’s ‘big, beautiful’ budget plan is the largest Medicaid cut in American history.” She emphasized the implications for healthcare and family welfare in America.

Continuing her critique, Garcia noted that “In Texas alone, over 4.8 million people, 16.2% of the population, rely on Medicaid for their healthcare.” She warned that this plan would negatively affect families within her community.

Further elaborating on the national impact, she stated that “Trump’s Republican plan slashes BILLIONS from Medicaid.” According to Garcia, nearly 14 million Americans stand to lose their healthcare coverage as a result of these cuts.

Sylvia Garcia was born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and currently resides in Houston. She has an extensive political career including serving in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018 before joining Congress. A graduate of Texas Woman’s University and Texas Southern University with degrees in BA and JD respectively, she succeeded Gene Green as representative for Texas’ 29th district.
