University of Houston Men’s Basketball junior forward Joseph Tugler was named a finalist for the Naismith National Defensive Player of the Year presented by MOLECULE Award, according to a March 27 announcement.
Tugler’s recognition highlights his defensive contributions to the Cougars during the 2025-26 season. He leads his team with an average of 1.5 blocks per game and is second in rebounds and steals, averaging 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per contest.
This season, Tugler ranks eighth in the Big 12 Conference for blocks per game and has moved into sixth place in Houston’s career history with a total of 162 blocks. His performance included a career-high 20 points and ten rebounds against Arizona during the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament Championship, earning him a spot on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team.
Tugler has recorded seven games with three or more blocked shots this season, including five against Syracuse at the Players Era Championship in Las Vegas on November 24, and has achieved double-digit rebounds in back-to-back games against Texas Tech and Baylor. Earlier this year, he received All-Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention honors as well as being named to both the NABC All-Gulf District Second Team and Big 12 All-Defensive Team for a second consecutive year—the first Cougar to achieve multiple conference All-Defensive selections.
A year ago, Tugler was recognized as Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and won the Lefty Driesell Award as national top defensive player. Other finalists for this year’s Naismith award include Flory Bidunga (Kansas), Rueben Chinyelu (Florida), and Zuby Ejiofor (St. John’s).
The broader significance of this nomination reflects both individual achievement by Tugler and continued prominence for Houston Men’s Basketball within national collegiate athletics.
