The University of Houston women’s tennis team lost to Texas Tech, 4-1, in the first round of the Big 12 Tennis Tournament on April 15 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

The match saw Houston, seeded seventh with an overall record of 18-6, drop the doubles point after seniors Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli were defeated by Hailey Murphy and Yekaterina Dmitrichenko. The Cougars’ juniors Elizaveta Morozova and Iva Sepa also lost their doubles match against Mariia Hlahola and Elena Daskalova.

Schouten managed to tie the score for Houston by winning her singles match against Ella Brownback, marking her seventeenth win of the season. However, Texas Tech regained momentum as Zeghlouli fell to Dmitrichenko in singles play. The Red Raiders clinched victory with wins from Havana Kadi over Petja Drame and Murphy over Morozova.

In doubles competition, #83-ranked Murphy and Dmitrichenko secured a decisive win for Texas Tech on court one. Other matches included Hlahola/Daskalova defeating Drame/Morozova on court two. In singles play, besides Schouten’s victory for Houston, other points went to Texas Tech through wins by Murphy, Dmitrichenko, and Kadi.
