The University of Houston women’s tennis team secured a 4-0 victory against Cincinnati on Apr. 12, closing out its regular season at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center.
This result marks the end of Houston’s regular matches, giving them an overall record of 18 wins and 5 losses, including an 8-5 record in Big 12 play. The win positions the Cougars for their upcoming seeding announcement for the Big 12 Tournament.
Houston clinched the doubles point by winning two out of three matches. Valeriia Krokhotina and Iva Sepa defeated Morgan Pyrz and Milica Popovski with a score of 6-2 on court three, while Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli won their match against Sakurako Watanabe and Rozalia Gruszczynska, finishing at 6-4 on court one. Cincinnati managed to secure a doubles win as Gabrielle Guenther and Tara Kurepa overcame Petja Drame and Elizaveta Morozova, ending that match at 6-2.
In singles play, Krokhotina dominated her opponent Watanabe with scores of 6-1, 6-2. Sepa followed by defeating Kurepa in straight sets (6-0, 6-4). Schouten sealed the overall victory for Houston after edging past Popovski in a close second-set tiebreaker (6-0, 7-6(2)).
With this sweep over Cincinnati—who finished their conference schedule at one win and twelve losses—the Cougars now await confirmation of their seeding for the Big 12 Tournament set to begin Wednesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
The broader impact of this victory is that it provides momentum for Houston as they enter postseason play within one of college tennis’s most competitive conferences.
