Houston swimming & diving tops Rice with strong finish at final dual meet

The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team secured a 152-81 victory over Rice in its final dual meet of the season at the CRWC Natatorium. The Cougars recorded 12 first-place finishes during Saturday’s competition.

The event began with a strong performance from the 400-yard medley relay team, consisting of Alexia Duncan, Evelyn Entrekin, Noor El Gendy, and Liya Goupil. They finished three seconds ahead of their competitors with a time of 3:36.63.

Houston then won eight consecutive events. Sienna Bruner led in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.82. Alexia Duncan took first place in both backstroke events, finishing the 100-yard in 54.06 and the 200-yard in 1:58.60.

Sydney Nethercutt claimed victory in the 200-yard butterfly by touching the wall at 1:58.33. Liya Goupil finished first in both the 50-yard (23.35) and 100-yard freestyle (50.45) races.

Evelyn Entrekin was fastest in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:01.88, while Virag Peter won the last individual race, completing the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:13.42.

The meet concluded with another win for Houston as Goupil, Jenna Kerkman, Bruner, and Manita Sathianchokwisan posted a time of 4:20.16 to secure first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

On diving boards, Michelle McLeod achieved top scores in both the 1-meter (296.78) and 3-meter (331.50) competitions.

Houston’s next event is its last home meet of the season—the First Chance Meet—scheduled for February 6-7 at CWRC Natatorium.
