Houston’s property tax rate in Q4 2025 exceeds US average by more than double

Houston property owners paid taxes equal to 1.9% of their home values in the fourth quarter of 2025—more than 2.1 times above the national average, BlockShopper.com reports.

Data from the 109 homes sold during the quarter show Houston’s median sales price was $133,240. For 2025, the city’s median property tax bill stood at $2,493, representing 1.9% of the median home value assessed that year.

The average effective property tax rate nationwide reached 0.888% in 2024.

In Fort Bend County, Arcola and Pearland posted the county’s two highest effective tax rates.

This article determined Houston’s 2025 effective property tax rate by factoring in estimated inflation and using 2021 county tax data. Actual effective property tax rates could differ slightly in some cases.

Across the U.S., home prices increased again in 2025, lifting the national median to about $447,000 in June—a rise of 1.13% over the prior year, Redfin data shows. The market also displayed a notable imbalance, with sellers outnumbering buyers by 36%, or 508,715 homes. Redfin considers a market balanced when the number of sellers and buyers are within 10% of each other.
