University of Houston Men’s Golf junior Chi Chun Chen led his team with a 2-under 69 in the second round of the Cabo Collegiate at Twin Dolphin Club on Monday. Chen recorded four birdies during his round and is tied for 26th place with a total score of 143.
The Houston team improved its performance from the first round by nine strokes, finishing the day in 13th place with a combined score of 587. Both senior Hudson Weibel and junior Chi Chun Chen are tied for 26th at 143, while senior Kevin An holds a tie for 68th at 152. Junior Grant Doggett and sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen are both tied for 72nd at 153.
Arkansas, ranked ninth nationally, led after the second day with a score of 551, holding a three-stroke lead over eleventh-ranked Arkansas. Other top teams include Arizona State (557), Rice (560), Mississippi (563), Tennessee (564), Arizona (569), Georgia Tech (571), Florida State (572), and Stanford (573). The tournament includes ten programs ranked among the nation’s top fifty.
Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout shot a round-low score of 63 to take the individual lead at twelve under par. Ziqin Zhou from California, Gerardo Gomez and Erich Fortlage from Arkansas, and Michael Mjaaseth from Arizona State are tied for second at six under par.
At the Colin Montgomerie Invitational held at Sweetwater Country Club, junior Enrique Karg posted rounds of 70 and 71 to finish the first day tied for thirteenth place. Karg made four birdies in his opening round and added three more along with an eagle in the afternoon session. Senior Bryant Hiskey is tied for thirty-fourth at 147, while freshman Jayk Altic is tied for forty-second at 149.
The final rounds of both tournaments will take place Tuesday morning. In Los Cabos, Houston players will compete alongside athletes from California and Loyola starting at 9:30 a.m., while Karg begins play in Sugar Land at 8:30 a.m.
Following these events, Houston will host its All-American Intercollegiate on March 16-17 at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas. The team will then organize the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on March 23-24.
