The University of Houston men’s golf team finished the first day of the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational tied for sixth place with Georgia, according to an April 4 announcement. Junior Grant Doggett led the Cougars, tying for third individually at 9-under-par after shooting rounds of 68 and 67 at Forest Hills Golf Club.

The tournament is significant as it features strong collegiate teams and provides a platform for players to showcase their skills ahead of postseason play. Doggett recorded only one bogey in each round and made a total of eleven birdies over two rounds on the par-72 course.

Senior Hudson Weibel was tied for fifteenth place at six-under-par, highlighted by a first-round score of 64. Weibel joined Andy Sanders as one of only two Cougars to record multiple rounds of 64 or lower during their careers. Other notable performances included junior Chi Chun Chen (tied for thirty-first), sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen (tied for fortieth), and senior Bryant Hiskey II (tied for fifty-eighth).

North Carolina held the team lead after the opening day with a score of thirty-under-par, followed by Oklahoma State and Notre Dame. Individually, Georgia’s JD Culbreth led with a score of 132, while Pepperdine’s Mahanth Chirravuri was second at 134. Doggett shared third place with Gaven Lane from Oklahoma State and Sihan Sandh from North Carolina.

The final round is scheduled to begin Sunday morning, with Houston competing alongside Pepperdine and LSU starting at 7:50 a.m. Central Daylight Time. Following this event, Houston will close its regular season at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate before entering postseason play in late April.

Looking ahead, Houston aims to compete in NCAA Regional tournaments across several sites nationwide from May 18-20.
