Houston falls to UCF in women’s basketball regular season finale

The University of Houston Women’s Basketball team ended its regular season with a 72-62 loss to UCF at Fertitta Center on Sunday. Houston now holds a record of 7-22 overall and 1-17 in Big 12 play.

Three players from Houston scored in double figures. Senior guard TK Pitts led the Cougars with 13 points and seven rebounds, marking her 14th game this season scoring in double digits. Graduate forward Amirah Abdur-Rahim contributed 12 points and was the team’s top rebounder with eight boards. Freshman Kayla King added 10 points, including five in the first quarter.

UCF improved to an 11-18 record (3-15 Big 12) with three players posting double-doubles. Khyala Ngodu led all scorers with 20 points and also collected 10 rebounds. Kristol Ayson had 16 points and matched Ngodu’s rebounding total, while Mahogany Chandler-Roberts finished with a team-high 11 rebounds along with her 12 points.

The first quarter was closely contested, ending with UCF ahead by two points. Houston started strong in the second quarter, opening on an 8-2 run and maintaining a narrow lead at halftime, up 38-36.

In the third quarter, both teams exchanged leads before UCF went on a decisive 13-2 run to close out the period ahead by seven. Houston responded in the fourth quarter with an eight-point run to reduce the deficit to one point, but UCF secured the win by converting ten of their final twelve points from free throws.

Looking ahead, Houston will compete against No. 9 seed BYU (20-10, 9-9 Big 12) in the First Round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The game is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
