The University of Houston Track and Field team won six events on April 18 before severe weather forced an early end to the Tom Tellez Alumni Invitational. The competition was halted just before the start of the men’s 200-meter race.

The event highlighted strong performances from both men’s and women’s teams. The women’s 4×100-meter relay team, consisting of Ruth Agadama, Taylor Jackson, Matilde Ochoa, and Alexa Smothers, recorded a season-best time of 44.66 seconds to secure first place. In field events, Cordell Nwokeji claimed his third shot put victory this season with a mark of 18.96 meters.

Antrea Mita won the men’s high jump at 2.16 meters while Kenneth Owen placed third at 2.01 meters. Kaycee McCoy took first in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.28 seconds.

Agadama also led a sweep in the women’s 100-meter dash by finishing first in 11.55 seconds; Ochoa came second at 11.62 and Jackson was third with a time of 11.65 seconds. Jaelyn Reeves-Lile earned victory in the men’s 100-meter dash at a time of 10.43 seconds.

Other notable finishes included Shawn Freeman taking second place in the men’s 800-meter run (1:51.13), Noah Hanson placing third in the men’s 110-meter hurdles (13.97), and William King IV finishing third in the men’s 400-meter hurdles (52.46). In field events for women, Cleo Agyepong set a personal best to finish second in shot put (16.56 meters) while Sydney Freeman finished third (15.46 meters), moving up to eighth on Houston’s all-time performance list.

Looking ahead, select Houston athletes will compete at Penn Relays starting Thursday while others will participate at Rice University’s J Fred Duckett Twilight meet on Saturday.
