The University of Houston Softball team lost game two of its Big 12 weekend series, 7-2, against Baylor at Getterman Stadium on Friday, Apr. 3.
This result evens the series at one game each and leaves the Cougars with a record of 19-22 overall and 2-12 in Big 12 play. The loss comes after Houston initially took a lead in the fourth inning before Baylor responded with a seven-run sixth inning to secure the win.
Freshman RyLee Gardner had her seventh career multi-hit performance, going two-for-three with an RBI. Sophomore Madox Mitchael reached her 40th base hit of the season and became the third Cougar this year to achieve that mark. Freshman Shelby Taylor recorded her first hit in four games with a double, which was her seventeenth hit and second double this season. Junior Bethany Aguilar scored her tenth run of the year and has now reached double digits for runs in consecutive seasons.
In key moments during the fourth inning, Houston loaded two runners on base due to catcher’s interference and a fielder’s choice. A throwing error allowed Aguilar to score from second base for the game’s opening run. Shortly after, Gardner singled to bring home senior Mandy Esman for another run.
Houston will try to win the series against Baylor in game three scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., which will be streamed on ESPN+.
