The University of Houston Softball team lost 10-6 to Brigham Young University in the second game of their Big 12 weekend series at Gail Miller Field on Friday, Apr. 10.

The result marks the Cougars’ (20-24, 3-14 Big 12) fourteenth conference loss this season. The team collected ten hits, reaching double digits for the thirteenth time this year, and made efforts to close a significant deficit with multiple runs scored in both the third and fifth innings. Despite narrowing BYU’s lead to just two runs at one point, Houston was unable to overtake as BYU (13-26, 4-10 Big 12) added more runs late in the game.

Senior Kylei Griffin had her second multi-hit performance of the season and hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning—her second homer this year and fifth overall for her career. Junior Makenna Mitchell contributed by going two-for-three with a double and is now tied for sixth place on Houston’s all-time single-season doubles list after hitting her thirteenth double of the season. Mitchell has recorded four multi-hit games in her last six outings.

Senior Mandy Esman also tallied two hits, marking her tenth multi-hit game this season and twenty-ninth of her career. Sophomore Isabel Cintron extended her hitting streak to three games with another base hit, bringing her total to seven hits over that span.

Houston opened scoring when Mitchell doubled and was brought home by freshman RyLee Gardner’s single. In key moments during the third inning, Ariel Redmond reached on an infield fielder’s choice that scored Mitchell; Griffin singled home Maddie Hartley; then Esman singled again to bring Redmond across home plate. In the fifth inning, following Cintron’s leadoff single, Griffin delivered a two-run homer that cut BYU’s lead down to just two runs before BYU responded with insurance scores late.

The Cougars will conclude their weekend series against BYU on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m., streamed live on ESPN+.
