Houston Cougars men’s golf in ninth after first day at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

The University of Houston men’s golf team finished the first day of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in ninth place at Finley Golf Club, according to an April 11 statement.

The event marks a key moment for the Cougars as they look to build momentum ahead of postseason play. The tournament, which spans two days and covers 54 holes, saw Houston post rounds of 282 and 280 for a total score of 562.

Senior Hudson Weibel and junior Chi Chun Chen led the Cougars, both tied for sixteenth at two-under-par (138). Weibel recorded four birdies in each round with consecutive scores of 69. Chen overcame an early bogey in his second round and added several birdies throughout his play. Junior Grant Doggett ended the day tied for thirty-eighth at 142, while sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen was tied for fifty-third at 144. Senior Bryant Hiskey II finished eighty-seventh at 155, and senior Kevin An, competing individually, was tied for eighty-third at 152.

Host team North Carolina held the lead with a team score of 531. Their “B” team followed in second place with a score of 548. Other top teams included Duke (550), Texas A&M (551), Nebraska (557), UNCW (559), East Tennessee State (559), Elon (561), UCF (564) and Florida Atlantic (564). North Carolina’s Grant Roscich led individual scores with a total of 129.

The final round is scheduled to begin Sunday morning. The Cougars will compete alongside players from Elon and UCF starting off hole ten beginning at approximately seven o’clock Central Daylight Time.

Looking ahead, Houston will participate in the Big Twelve Championship from April twenty-seventh through twenty-ninth before learning their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show on April twenty-ninth.
