The University of Houston Men’s Golf team finished 12th at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, according to an April 12 announcement. The event took place at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where the Cougars completed the tournament with a final round score of 296 and a total score of 858 over three rounds.
This result matters as it concludes the regular season for Houston and sets up their postseason schedule. Junior Chi Chun Chen led the Cougars by tying for 38th place with a score of 214. Senior Hudson Weibel tied for 43rd at 215, sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen tied for 49th at 216, junior Grant Doggett tied for 53rd at 217, and senior Bryant Hiskey II tied for 80th at 228. Senior Kevin An competed as an individual and finished tied for 84th with a score of 229.
Host team North Carolina, ranked No.11 nationally, won the tournament with a total score of 809—20 shots ahead of No.27 Duke. North Carolina’s “B” team secured third place with a score of 829. Other teams finishing in the top eleven included Texas A&M (832), Nebraska (838), UNCW (842), East Tennessee State (842), UCF (851), Elon (854), Kennesaw State (856) and Florida Atlantic (856).
North Carolina’s Niall Sheils Donegan claimed medalist honors after finishing two strokes ahead of teammate Grant Roscich with a two-day total of twelve-under-par-210.
Looking forward, Houston will compete in the Big Twelve Championship from April 27 to April 29 at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. The team’s postseason fate will be revealed during the NCAA Selection Show on April 29 on Golf Channel. If selected, Houston aims to participate in NCAA Regional play for its sixth consecutive season from May 18–20 across six different sites nationwide.
The upcoming tournaments present further opportunities for members of the Houston squad to advance individually and as a team.
