The University of Houston baseball team lost 14-7 to Baylor at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park on Sunday afternoon, March 29. Despite multiple players recording two hits each, the Cougars were unable to overcome an early deficit.
This game marks another loss for Houston in Big 12 play, with their conference record now standing at 1-8. The outcome highlights the challenges faced by the team this season as they work to improve their standing.
Shortstop Tyler Cox, outfielders Tre Broussard and Xavier Perez, and second baseman Antonelli Savattere each had two hits for Houston. Cox also contributed a run, a triple, and two RBIs. Third baseman Riley Jackson led the Cougars with three RBIs while Perez finished with two runs and a double. Savattere added a run in the loss.
Houston starter Paul Schmitz took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) over 3.2 innings pitched. Baylor’s Ethan Calder collected the win by giving up four runs on seven hits through seven innings. Brady Janusek led Baylor’s offense with three runs scored, a home run, and two RBIs.
Baylor established an early lead by scoring four runs in the second inning through a combination of hits and errors. The Bears continued to build their advantage throughout the game before Houston narrowed the gap in later innings with key plays from Cox and Jackson.
Looking ahead, Houston will travel to Lubbock for a three-game series against Texas Tech starting Thursday evening at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
