Houston Baseball will play a three-game series against Texas Christian University (TCU) beginning Friday, April 24, in Fort Worth. The Cougars and Horned Frogs are scheduled to compete at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by games at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday, with all matchups available for streaming on ESPN+.
This matchup is notable as both teams have a balanced history; the overall series between Houston and TCU is tied at 54-54-2. While Houston leads the series when playing at home, TCU has an advantage in games played in Fort Worth and neutral sites. The current streak favors TCU with three consecutive wins.
The probable pitchers for the opening game are Kendall Hoffman for Houston and Trever Baumler for TCU. On Saturday, Paul Schmitz will take the mound for Houston while Lance Davis starts for TCU. Sunday’s starter for Houston is yet to be announced; Zack James is set to pitch for TCU.
Houston has recorded significant victories this season against highly ranked opponents such as Texas and Alabama according to the NCAA’s latest RPI release. The team has five Quad One wins so far this year and holds a record of three wins out of eight games against ranked teams including recent victories over West Virginia and Wake Forest.
Several former Cougars have also made appearances on Major League Baseball Opening Day rosters this season: John King (Miami), Jared Triolo (Pittsburgh), and Connor Wong (Boston). In total, fifteen former players are active across MLB or Minor League Baseball rosters at the start of their respective seasons.
Senior Tyler Cox currently leads Houston with a .324 batting average in conference play, highlighted by his high contact rate which ranks third nationally among hitters who have seen more than 250 pitches this season. Junior Tre Broussard has been recognized as a top prospect on multiple MLB Draft lists ahead of the upcoming draft cycle.
Looking ahead, Houston faces one of its toughest schedules yet—playing nearly half its games against teams that finished last season in the Top 50 of NCAA’s RPI rankings.
