Houston baseball loses 8-4 to Kansas in series finale

The Houston Baseball team lost to Kansas, 8-4, in the series finale on Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark. The game saw Houston pitcher Jackson Baker take the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kansas reliever Manning West earned the win by pitching the final one and a third innings.

This result leaves Houston with a record of 12 wins and 11 losses overall, and a conference record of one win and five losses in Big 12 play. Kansas improves to a record of 15 wins and eight losses overall, with four wins and two losses in conference games.

Senior Tyler Cox led Houston offensively by going three for five at bat with two runs batted in, including his fifth multi-hit game of the season. Cade Climie contributed by scoring two runs and drawing two walks.

Houston took an early lead when Cox hit a double that brought home Justin Cherrington and Climie. Kansas responded by tying the game in the third inning with a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI double. In the fourth inning, Cox drove in another run for Houston before Kansas regained control with a bases-loaded single that scored two runs.

A double-steal allowed freshman Peyton Dickens to score for Houston late in the game, but Kansas pulled ahead for good after hitting a solo home run followed by a three-run double in their half of the eighth inning.

Houston is scheduled to return home on Tuesday for a matchup against second-ranked Texas at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.
