The Houston Baseball team lost the opening game of its three-game series against Brigham Young University on April 9, with a final score of 3-2 at Schroeder Park.
The close contest saw Houston hit two solo home runs but struggle to generate more offense. Right-fielder Xavier Perez recorded his ninth home run of the season in the third inning, tying the game at one after BYU scored in the first. BYU regained the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run frame and managed a total of 11 hits, while limiting Houston to just three.
Despite having runners on base during each of the first six innings, Houston was unable to bring them home aside from Perez’s early homer. Designated hitter Cade Climie narrowed the deficit with a solo home run in the eighth inning, making it a one-run game. However, Houston could not complete the comeback.
With this loss, both teams now hold records of 16-16 overall for the season. In Big 12 conference play, BYU improves to 6-7 while Houston drops to 3-10.
Houston will look to even up the series in game two scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by Saturday’s finale at 1 p.m. Both games are set to be streamed on ESPN+.
