Houston senior Grant Doggett led the Cougars to a tie for ninth place at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational with a final round score of 2-under 69, according to a March 24 announcement. The tournament took place at Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Florida.
Doggett was the top performer for Houston in all three rounds and made five birdies in his last round. His performance helped Houston finish ahead of several ranked teams, including Arizona State, Pepperdine, USC, and Wake Forest. The team also tied with Duke.
Seniors Hudson Weibel and junior Hsuan-Yi Chen both finished tied for 34th overall after posting scores of three under par across the event’s three rounds. Weibel shot a one-under-par 70 on Tuesday with five birdies, while Chen recorded an even-par 71 that included seven birdies—the most by any Cougar that day. Junior Chi Chun Chen added a one-over-par 72 featuring four birdies as Houston collectively shot two under par as a team during the final round.
The Cougars are scheduled to compete next at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational on April 4-5 at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. They will then close out their regular season at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate held April 11-12 at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
