U.S. Senator John Cornyn of Texas has expressed his support following the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act by the U.S. House of Representatives. The legislation includes a provision that aims to deregulate firearm suppressors, an initiative that Cornyn is advocating for in the Senate’s version of the bill.
“Firearm silencers should not be subject to overregulation and unconstitutional taxes that hamstring Texans’ freedoms and pocketbooks,” stated Sen. Cornyn. He further remarked, “I’m proud to see the House stand up for law-abiding gun owners, eliminate senseless red tape, and proudly defend our Second Amendment rights, and I will continue to fight for this as the Senate works to pass President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill.”
Currently, suppressors are regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA), which imposes additional regulatory requirements. Senator Cornyn has cosponsored the Hearing Protection Act, which seeks to remove these regulations and replace them with an instantaneous National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) background check. This change would align the purchasing process for suppressors with that of rifles and shotguns.
The reconciliation package passed by the House includes provisions from the Hearing Protection Act aimed at removing registration requirements for firearm silencers and eliminating manufacturer taxes on silencers by amending Sec. 112029 in tax code regulations.
