Today, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) addressed the Senate floor to highlight key aspects of the recently enacted One Big Beautiful Bill. The legislation aims to prevent what he described as “the largest tax hike in American history” and introduces work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents to access means-tested programs like Medicaid.
Senator Cornyn emphasized that the bill includes provisions beneficial to working parents by maintaining the Child Tax Credit and ensuring no taxes on tips or overtime for middle-class families. Despite acknowledging imperfections in the bill, he stated it makes significant reforms to manage national debt.
Cornyn criticized Democrats for opposing his amendment, which sought to penalize states providing Medicaid benefits to illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes. He expressed disappointment over Democratic opposition but noted relief that their efforts did not succeed.
The bill also addresses border security issues, reimbursing states like Texas for border management efforts due to perceived federal inaction under the Biden-Harris administration. Cornyn pointed out that Texas has faced challenges due to its extensive border with Mexico and criticized policies he views as reckless.
“This legislation is an important step in correcting the previous administration’s costly, and in some cases, deadly errors,” Cornyn remarked, expressing satisfaction that a proposed $2.6 trillion tax increase on households earning less than $400,000 was avoided.
