U.S. Senator John Cornyn led a press conference in Washington, D.C., alongside several Senate Republican colleagues to discuss the impact of President Trump’s recent crime reduction measures in the capital. The event also featured Anna Giaritelli, a reporter from the Washington Examiner, who shared her personal experiences.
During his remarks, Sen. Cornyn addressed concerns about ongoing violent crime in Washington, D.C. “The nation’s capital has been plagued by out-of-control violent crime for a long time now,” he said.
Sen. Cornyn credited President Trump for taking action on the issue. “Fortunately, President Trump has not only acknowledged this problem, but he’s actually done something about it.”
He emphasized that efforts to address crime are not limited to local residents or government workers. “This is not just for the benefit of people who happen to work here or residents who live here – this is for the benefit of the thousands, maybe even millions, of tourists and others who come to Washington, D.C.”
Cornyn cited data from after President Trump announced National Guard involvement in law enforcement activities. “The three weeks after President Trump announced the National Guard would begin law enforcement efforts, burglary went down from 77 to 40, and combined violent crime has dropped precipitously.”
He expressed appreciation for those involved in these initiatives. “I’m grateful to President Trump, as well as the new U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, for their efforts to help make the District of Columbia safe again.”
Cornyn also noted federal support expanding beyond Washington: “I also applaud President Trump for his efforts to expand the federal support for local law enforcement beyond the nation’s capital.”
Anna Giaritelli was recognized by Cornyn during the event: “Anna has been here to eloquently and courageously tell her story about what is not normal, and what should never be tolerated.”
Concluding his remarks, Cornyn called for accountability: “There’s just been too many excuses, and the time for excuses is over.”
Senator Cornyn has held his seat since first winning election in 2002 against Ron Kirk with 55% of the vote. He was re-elected in subsequent races: defeating Rick Noriega in 2008 with nearly 55%, David Alameel in 2014 with over 61%, and MJ Hegar in 2020 with more than 53%.
