U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) appeared on Newsmax’s Newsline to discuss his concerns about Democratic policies on crime and his recently introduced LETITIA Act. Cornyn argued that Democrats’ opposition to certain crime-fighting measures is driven by what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

“It takes Trump Derangement Syndrome to a whole new level, where instead of agreeing with President Trump that, yes, public safety is important and we need to work together to address that, they choose the other side – which is less public safety, more crime,” Cornyn said during the interview.

Cornyn credited former President Donald Trump’s leadership for progress on public safety issues. “The progress has been remarkable, but it’s not something you take for granted. And without President Trump’s leadership, it wouldn’t have happened,” he stated.

The conversation also focused on the LETITIA Act. This legislation aims to hold corrupt public officials accountable if they commit acts such as federal bank fraud or tax fraud while in office. Cornyn explained the reasoning behind introducing the bill: “It hurts the public, and people who are public officials should not be taking advantage of it by lying on their mortgage applications in order to achieve discounted rates on their payments.” He added, “It was important to introduce that legislation and to point out this seems to be a more and more common crime and one that needs to be investigated and punished.”

Senator Cornyn has served as a U.S. senator from Texas since 2002. He won reelection campaigns against Ron Kirk in 2002 with 55% of the vote, Rick Noriega in 2008 with 54.8%, David Alameel in 2014 with 61.6%, and MJ Hegar in 2020 with 53.5%.
