U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has written an op-ed on FoxNews.com, criticizing former President Biden’s handling of border security and urging Congress to reimburse Texas for the expenses incurred during Operation Lone Star. The senator argues that the federal government should repay Texas for the billions spent when Biden allegedly failed to secure the southern border.
Senator Cornyn claims that President Biden neglected his duty to keep citizens safe, resulting in millions of illegal immigrants crossing the border and cartels smuggling synthetic opioids. “We all owe Governor Abbott a debt of gratitude for doing what the Biden administration wouldn’t, but we also owe Texas a monetary debt,” he states.
The senator highlights several policy changes made by President Biden, such as ending Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy and halting border wall construction. He attributes these actions to increased illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Cornyn praises former President Trump for reversing these policies upon taking office, noting a significant decrease in border encounters and increased ICE arrests under Trump’s administration. He argues that Trump’s approach was more effective than Biden’s policies.
Governor Abbott has requested Congress to reimburse Texas $11.1 billion spent on Operation Lone Star. Cornyn is working with key political figures, including President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Thune, to ensure Congress fulfills this request through a reconciliation bill known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
The senator stresses the importance of including reimbursement provisions in the final version of the bill and vows to continue efforts until Texas is repaid for its financial sacrifices.
