U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) addressed the Senate regarding the growing risk posed by the New World screwworm to Texas agriculture and cattle production across the United States. He highlighted that Texas leads the nation in cattle production, accounting for 12 million head annually, nearly 15% of total U.S. output, and generating more than $1 billion in revenue.
Cornyn warned about an outbreak of the parasite near the U.S.-Mexico border, stating: “Unfortunately, this essential food supply and corresponding food prices are under threat from the outbreak of a particularly pernicious parasite called the New World screwworm.” He added, “A case of the New World screwworm was reported less than 400 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border.”
He further noted that if an outbreak were to occur in Texas, it could cost livestock producers approximately $1 billion and impact the broader economy by $3.7 billion. “This would be absolutely devastating to places like Texas, but also to the entire country,” Cornyn said.
To address this issue, Cornyn mentioned efforts led by Secretary Rollins with international partners and construction by USDA of a sterile fly disbursal facility in Hidalgo, Texas. “Secretary Rollins is currently working with our international partners on an ambitious plan to slow the spread of this terrible parasite,” he stated. “USDA is building a sterile fly disbursal facility in Hidalgo, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley.”
Cornyn announced plans to introduce an amendment during appropriations discussions aimed at strengthening national preparedness against this agricultural threat. “I’ll be offering an amendment during the appropriations process on the floor to ensure the United States is prepared to combat the threat of this parasite,” he said.
He concluded by expressing his commitment to supporting Texas ranchers and safeguarding America’s food supply: “I look forward to continuing to work with her and all of my colleagues to ensure that Texas’ cattle ranchers and our country’s food supply are kept safe from this parasite.”
John Cornyn has served as U.S. Senator since winning election victories over several opponents including MJ Hegar in 2020 (53.5%–43.9%), David Alameel in 2014 (61.6%–34.3%), Rick Noriega in 2008 (54.8%–42.8%), and Ron Kirk in 2002 (55%–43%).
