U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Mark Kelly have introduced the Counternarcotics Enhancement Act, aimed at strengthening collaboration between the United States and Mexico in countering narcotics. The legislation requires the Director of National Intelligence to present an action plan to Congress, focusing on improving cooperation with Mexico.
Senator Cornyn emphasized the importance of this initiative by stating, “One innocent life lost because of illicit narcotics smuggled into the U.S. by way of Mexico is one too many.” He highlighted that the legislation would help leverage the U.S.-Mexico relationship to combat these threats effectively.
Senator Kelly also stressed the need for joint efforts against drug trafficking, saying, “To win the fight against drug trafficking, the U.S. and Mexico have to work together against the cartels.”
The act mandates that the Director of National Intelligence provide a detailed plan that includes an assessment of relationships with Mexican government elements, strategies for enhancing cooperation, and recommendations for resources needed to implement these strategies efficiently.
