Junior thrower Cordell Nwokeji was named the Big 12 Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week, according to an announcement by the league office on Apr. 1.
This recognition comes after Nwokeji achieved his second consecutive win in the men’s shot put at the Victor Lopez Classic on Saturday, where he set a personal best mark of 19.55 meters. In the team’s outdoor opener, he also secured victory with a throw of 19.48 meters.
Nwokeji’s recent performance places him second in program history for shot put distance, just two centimeters behind Mark Baughman’s school record set in 1979 at 19.57 meters. The junior currently leads all athletes in the Big 12 Conference and is ranked third nationally this season.
This marks Nwokeji’s first career Big 12 Weekly honor and is only the fifth time an athlete from Houston has received this distinction. He joins previous honorees Antrea Mita, KeAyla Dove, De’Vion Wilson, and Jamar Marshall Jr.
The achievement highlights continued success for Houston Track and Field athletes within both conference and national competition.
