Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a current member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 29th district, shared updates on various events and issues through her social media posts this week. These updates included honoring police officers, participating in an academic commencement ceremony, and addressing concerns over proposed federal budget cuts.
On May 15, Rep. Sylvia Garcia spoke during National Police Week to commemorate four officers from her community who were being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. She emphasized their bravery and sacrifice, stating “This National Police Week, I spoke on the House floor to honor the four brave officers from our community being added to the @NLEOMF National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Their courage, service, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
The following day on May 16, she attended Houston Community College’s Spring Commencement at NRG Arena where she received an honorary degree. In a post reflecting on the event, Garcia expressed her admiration for the graduates’ determination: “What an incredible morning at @WeAreHCCS Spring Commencement 2025 ! I was deeply honored to receive an honorary degree today.”
Later that day, Rep. Garcia addressed legislative developments in Washington regarding potential budget cuts by Republicans affecting Medicaid and SNAP programs. Expressing concern for her constituents’ welfare she stated: “This week in Washington, Republicans are showing their cards; they want to cut Medicaid and SNAP.”
Sylvia Garcia has been serving Texas’ 29th District since replacing Gene Green in 2019 after previously serving in the Texas Senate from 2013-2018.
