The Houston Texans selected Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald with the 36th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, according to an April 24 announcement. McDonald was recognized as a unanimous All-American in 2025 and named the Big Ten Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year after a standout season.
McDonald’s selection is significant for the Texans as he brings strong credentials from his college career. In his final season at Ohio State, he recorded 65 tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles while anchoring one of the top run defenses in college football.
Scouting reports consistently praised McDonald’s abilities against the run. Matt Holder of Bleacher Report said that McDonald has “good size and a thick build with massive legs that help him absorb contact as a run defender.” Holder also said that McDonald’s strength allows him to stand up interior offensive linemen and reset the line of scrimmage when playing with proper technique.
NFL Draft Buzz described McDonald’s run defense as elite and wrote that “offensive coordinators will struggle to sustain ground games when he is controlling the A-gaps.” The site added that short-yardage situations become more difficult for opposing offenses when facing him.
Todd McShay evaluated McDonald for The Ringer and called him “an outstanding run defender and a scheme-versatile nose tackle who locates the ball, gets off blocks, and wraps up.” According to McShay, “he does not just take up space and clog the middle,” noting his ability to hold ground due to size, strength, and low center of gravity.
Analysts also highlighted an unusual aspect of McDonald’s play: his recovery ability. Bleacher Report described his unique skill at getting out of tough spots thanks to his combination of size, strength, and athleticism. According to McShay, “McDonald is quick for his size and slips blocks,” using his high tackle numbers as evidence that he can do more than just absorb contact.
With these assessments from multiple sources pointing toward rare physical tools and production at Ohio State, observers expect that Kayden McDonald could contribute immediately on defense for Houston.
